Find FSA Eligible Items In Your Amazon Order History

December 5, 2024

Make sure you've uncovered all the reimbursable gems in your Amazon order history.

As the end of the benefit plan year approaches, many of us scramble to locate receipts for FSA-eligible items. However, searching through your Amazon order history to find these items can be a frustrating and time-consuming process for three key reasons:

  1. High volume of purchases: The average consumer has hundreds of Amazon orders to sift through.
  2. Lack of clear labeling: Most FSA-eligible items on Amazon aren’t marked as such.
  3. Cumbersome claims process: After identifying eligible items, you still need to download each receipt as a PDF and submit multiple claims to your FSA provider.

This process can take hours and that’s why we created Silver: to automate this task and help you find FSA-eligible expenses not just on Amazon, but also from dozens of other retailers.

The Challenges of Finding Historical FSA Expenses

Amazon has an FSA Store frontend which includes thousands of items that are eligible FSA/HSA expenses. However, the majority of the eligible items on Amazon are not marked as eligible.

Items Marked on an Amazon Receipt

After purchasing an item on Amazon, your receipt will show up on your order history under "Your Orders." To confirm FSA eligibility:

  • Go to the orders page, find the item you believe is eligible and click the "View Invoice" link on the top right
  • Check the product description on the receipt. It should include the text: "FSA or HSA Eligible"
  • The bottom of the receipt will include a summary of all FSA eligible expenses in this receipt

See highlighted text in the receipt below

Items Not marked as FSA Eligible

Due to multiple reasons, the majority of the eligible items on Amazon are not marked as eligible and therefore cannot be purchased with a Flexible Spending Debit Card. The example below includes 4 first aid kits that are sold on Amazon. All of these products are eligible but only one of them is marked as eligible by Amazon (the farthest to the right)

Is Searching for FSA Eligible Items Online Worth my Time?

“How much money did I actually spend on FSA eligible times?” is a common question many people ask themselves. Silver scanned 100,000s of historical receipts and the average amount of FSA eligible items found across all the receipts we scanned is more than 4% of your total purchases. This means that if you purchased $5,000 worth of expenses at Costco and Amazon alone last year, you should expect an average of $200 of eligible FSA expenses.

There are also other factors that impact the amount of FSA eligible products one might expect. For instance:

  • Do you expect any childbirth related expenses?
  • How much of the common everyday eligible products did you buy?
  • Any chronic condition that requires purchasing eligible products (like syringes for diabetes)
